Equii, a business in food technology, raises $6 million in an early round

SAN FRANCISCO – An early backer of Impossible Foods has disbursed $6 Million in seed funding to food technology startup Equii, formerly Cella Farms.

Equii founded in 2021, has developed a proprietary approach to discovering highly nutritious sources of microbial protein that are used to ferment grains and produce high-protein grain flours. This flour has three to six times more protein in comparison to regular flour, with about half as many carbohydrates, and all nine essential amino acids.

Sliced bread with 10 grammes of protein per slice is the first product on the market. Within the next several months, the product will be introduced in a small number of cafes and restaurants, and online sales will begin the following year.

According to Alice Brooks, principal of Khosla Ventures, “we look for firms that have the potential to make a huge impact on society.” We are thrilled to support Equii as they redefine the natural essentials of our food, beginning with bread, to make a healthier diet more widely available.
